In 2004 Instinctive Sports celebrated its twentieth anniversary with the club moving to the College of St Mark and St John (Marjons), where it is currently based. The club was formed by a group of people who were interested in keeping fit, and who started to meet informally on a regular basis. The emphasis from the beginning was on enjoyment, participation and encouraging people to become involved in running ans physical exercise. In a short period of time the Glynis Kingham Centre on the Hoe became the new venue for club meetings, right up until the spring of 2004, when the move to Marjohns signalled a new chapter in our history.
Today the club has around one hundred members, all of whom retain the original enthusiasm and enjoyment of running. We have an even mix of male and female runers of all ages from 18 to our most senior member who is 77 years old. A considerable number of them started with the club having previously done little or no running. With the motivation and encouragement of training with other people, they have devoloped into regular particiants in runs and events.
Our members regularly take part in organised runs such as 10ks, half marathons and marathons in the local area and much further afield. The club regularly arranges weekend trips, to the London marathon for example, and has also taken groups races all over the world. Instinctive Sports has an active social calendar and provides a way to make new frienships through the common interest in running.
Training takes place on a Sunday morning and Tuesday evenings; the club's location at Marjons allows us to access some wonderful areas such as Plymbridge Woods and Roborough Down. In addition club members meet on a Thursday evening for a guided run at various locations in the area throughout the summer.
Over the last twenty years we have raised many thousands of pounds for local charities such as St Lukes Hospice in Plymouth and the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. The club has organised races for many years, such as the Guy Fawkes 10 mile run up until 2001. We currently hold the Sam Penny Scenic Challenge six mile run held every June which has become a popular fixture in the local running calendar in recent years. Proceeds from this event go towards our designated charity.
The club has runners of all abilities, from complete beginners to those with many years of experience, so everyone, regardless of who they are, will find it easy to fit in. As was mentioned earlier, the emphasis is on fun and participation. Being an instinctive sport!
